Altrusa is a service organisation that was founded in the USA just over 100 years ago. We contribute to the community through hands-on service, literacy projects, fundraisers and international outreach. Altrusa International of Ohariu is a brand new club that covers a similar geographic area to the Ohariu electorate in Wellington.

Our project “Get set for a brighter future” aims to provide sets of literacy resources that empower women and children to develop new skills, extend their knowledge, and understand the opportunities that are created through education. Altrusa have purchased sets of instructional readers for Linden Primary School, sets of novels for the Arohata Prison Library Book Club, and sets of books that represent women in technology for local primary and intermediate school libraries, providing a total of over 250 brand-new books to our local community.

We hope that the books we are donating to your school will provide positive role models for girls who may be encouraged to pursue STEM careers, and offer teachers a wider variety of teaching resources.

We welcome new ideas and aim to provide flexibility so that our members can give their time in a way that works for them. Meetings are held at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of each month in central Johnsonville. Guests are always welcome; contact the Club President to arrange a no obligation visit and see what Altrusa is all about!   altrusaohariu@gmail.com,
