HOMEWORK

Kiwi

It is expected that you will read with and to your child daily.  Books that come home in your child’s book bag have been read in reading group time with the teachers support.  Your input at home plays a huge role in your child’s reading success.  You can expect books Monday through Thursday, and a poem home on Friday.  Books stay in the book bag for a week in order for them to be revisited. In addition to reading you may get word rings to work on together.  These will assist your child to build their visual memory for some of the most common words.  A fun game to play with word rings is “Goodies and Baddies”.  Take the words off the ring and put them in piles.  If it is a known word it is a Goodie, an unknown word is a Baddie. We encourage you to utilize both Mathletics and Reading Eggs at home.

Reading - It is expected that all children will read for at least 10 minutes every night and use reading eggs as a supplementary reading activity. A poem will be sent home at the end of most weeks which we encourage children to read and discuss with their family. The poem may have a spelling focus such as a blend or a spelling pattern which  has been worked on in class. Numeracy - Children are encouraged to use Mathletics regularly and to complete tasks that their teacher has set. These activities will be targeted to the next step of each child’s learning. Spelling - Children will initially be given a ‘Spelling Rocket’ targeted at the specific Essential Word list they are up to. When these words have been learnt and sighted by teachers, they will give each child the next level to take home and learn in their own time.

Students should read independently, with others or be read to regularly. It is expected that students will also go on Reading Eggs.  We encourage students to use Mathletics and work on basic facts. Basic facts will be assessed throughout each term. Children will be encouraged to work on spelling and writing regularly, perhaps using their Google Docs. Some teachers may send home additional topic or unfinished work if required.
